205. Michelle McCool v. Mickie James – Diva’s Title – Royal Rumble 2010 -Phillips Arena, Atlanta, GA, USA
Commentators: Michael Cole (PBP), Jerry Lawler, Matt Stryker (Colour)
This was the conclusion to the infamous “Piggy James” storyline, wherein Michelle McCool and Layla bullied Mickie James for months, calling Mickie fat and ugly (despite the evidence on your television screen clearly stating otherwise) via a NEVER-ENDING SERIES of increasingly embarrassing skits.
I could talk about the match itself, but all you really need to know is that Layla comes down to the ring wearing a pig costume. Which wasn’t even the first time she had done that! What a bit to bring back. Also, we had to listen to 2010 Matt Stryker on commentary, arguably the worst announcer to ever live.
The only thing saving this from being one of the worst matches of all time is that the good guy actually won in the end, but that doesn’t save this from being dire, bottom of the barrel professional wrestling. Terrible television, made by pigs, for pigs (about pigs?).

A paragraph I wish I were making up: Fresh off the heels of eating a disgusting growth straight the fuck off of the face of Jillian Hall, The Boogeyman squashes a former World Champion in under 5 minutes, and then spits chewed up worms into Jillian Hall’s mouth.
The fact that this *isnt* the worst match in Royal Rumble history is a testament to how appalling the previous match on our list was. If your significant other walked in while you were watching this, you would be single before the Royal Rumble started. Vile, terrible television, that no sane or well-adjusted person would define as “wrestling” or “entertainment”.

Fucking Jamison.
Lo, the brief era where the Bushwhackers had a mentally challenged man as a manager. It was never expressly said out loud (unlike say a Eugene), and I know we aren’t supposed to say this type of thing in civilized society anymore, so please understand that I am stating a medical fact to you and if I am heretofore cancelled, I understand. But the character of Jamison in WWF was mentally retarded. Straight up. I don’t know what else to tell ya.
A shamefully stupid match and gimmick, but sadly it gets a lot worse out there. At least we had Heenan and Gorilla trying to make something of this, which helped to bump it above WOAT contender. Even with their efforts, this was unfunny, insensitive, and completely irredeemable.
202. The Mountie v. Koko B. Ware – Royal Rumble 1991 – Miami Arena, Miami, FL, USA

Wellp. The Mountie does a Nazi goose-step for heat, which promptly gets this match cut off of the coliseum video release of this show. To be clear, I’m not 100% on that (I mean, the match itself was garbage too), but I have to believe the BIG HEEL Nazi walk was what got this match removed from the WWE oeuvre for years. Maybe WWE just decided this match was useless. If WWE is embarrassed by you, you’re officially pretty fucking embarrassing.
As an aside, remember when the entire world agreed that Nazis were pieces of shit? And even a passing reference to Nazis was enough to get everybody to boo you? Lol good times. These days The Mountie would be a babyface in 37 states.

201. John Cena v. Kane – Royal Rumble 2012 – Scottrade Center – St. Louis, MO, USA

This was part of the Kane/Cena/Zack Ryder/Eve Torres storyline, one of the few cases in wrestling where an open attempt to bury someone actually worked in the fans eyes. Congratulations, guys! You did it. Zack Ryder was a complete loser from this point forward (with two or three exceptions, admittedly).
Had Zack just left WWE in 2010 when he was starting to get super over, who knows what could have been. I strongly doubt it could have gone worse for him no matter where he went, including TNA or Lucha Underground or what have you. Well, I guess it would have been much worse financially. Alas, here we are in 2021, and dear sweet Matt Cardona can barely catch on in AEW or TNA.
A very bad wrestling match, centered around a very bad storyline. Not “embarrassing” to wrestling, but only because WWE is so often this corny that I’d argue the layman expects wrestling to look like this.
200. Maven v. Rhyno – Royal Rumble 2005 (Sunday Night Heat) – Save Mart Center – Fresno, CA, USA

As a teenager, I remember wondering why Maven didn’t catch on more. As it turns out, Maven was pretty fucking bad at professional wrestling. This is probably the worst match of Rhyno’s career, and the absolute definition of a Sunday Night Heat match in the mid 00’s. Which is in no way a compliment.
199. Kaientai (Sho Funaki & Taka Michinoku) v. Lo-Down (Chaz & D-Lo Brown) – Royal Rumble 2001 (Sunday Night Heat) – New Orleans Arena, New Orleans, LA, USA

Chaz and D-Lo Brown! It may surprise you to find out, but the tag team of Lo-Down did not go on to great heights.
A note for you trivia buffs out there: this match was slated to be for the last spot in the Royal Rumble (the winning team would have to then choose a representative to enter the match). HUGE SPOILER the shitheads in neon win. However, (~!~!) in a backstage promo during the 2001 Royal Rumble event, Vince McMahon actually took the spot away from Lo-Down, eventually gifting it to the current host of the Price is Right, Drew Carey.
Every word of this is true. I would not lie to you. Terrible wrestling match.
198. Dawn Marie v. Torrie Wilson – Royal Rumble 2003 – Fleet Center, Boston, MA, USA

Torrie Wilson seeks her revenge, after Dawn Marie KILLED HER FATHER (death by Snu-Snu). They worked hard enough that it wasn’t a total joke, but this was very much a Dawn Marie vs. Torrie Wilson wrestling match. Seek it out only if you’re an Al Wilson completionist.
197. Judy Martin v. Rockin’ Robin – WWF Women’s Title – Royal Rumble 1989 – Houston, TX, USA

See, the main problem with this match is that Stephanie McMahon was only 13 years old, and thus hadn’t invented and perfected women’s wrestling yet. A low-end 1980s WWF women’s wrestling match.
196. Luna Vachon v. Sable – Strap Match – WWF Women’s Title – Royal Rumble 1999 – Arrowhead Pond, Anaheim, CA, USA

Fun trivia note: this is the match referenced at the start of the documentary Beyond The Mat, where Vince Russo instructs Sable to “sell” her back throughout the match.
It goes exactly as well as you would expect.

In the annals of WWE history, there are very few wrestlers who were worse than Heidenreich. Possibly the worst casket match of all time, which is saying a lot.
194. Big Boss Man v. “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan – Royal Rumble 1990 – Orlando Arena, Orlando, FL, USA

A bad match with a bad finish. The Boss Man would be a babyface by Wrestlemania VI, and could have afforded a loss to the Hacksaw. Or the other way around, honestly. What they gave us was not something you need to seek out, or that you will remember if you do find it.
193. Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake v. The Genius – Royal Rumble 1990 – Orlando Arena, Orlando, FL, USA

The Genius was actually pretty good! He’s like the best possible version of Peter Avalon, mixed with an incredible gymnast, with the BLOOD OF THE POFFO / SAVAGE FAMILY PUMPING THROUGH HIS VEINS. He was way ahead of his time. Unfortunately, he was against Brutus Beefcake, one of the all-time schmuckbags in wrestling (but living proof that in life, it’s not what you know but who you know).
192. The Miz v. Montel Vontavious Porter – United States Title – Royal Rumble 2010 – Phillips Arena, Atlanta, GA, USA

If you think Miz sucks now, go back and watch him at the start of his career. Miz, the visibly inferior wrestler, outwrestles MVP and pins him clean. Clunky, disjointed match.

Hands up if you’ve completely forgotten the New Age Outlaws mid 2010’s return. More on this later.

190. The Islanders (Haku & Tama) v. The Young Stallions (Jim Powers & Paul Roma) – 2/3 Falls – Royal Rumble 1988 – Copps Coliseum, Hamilton, ON, Canada
Commentators: Vince McMahon (PBP), Jesse Ventura (Colour)
Jim Powers takes a classic Royal Rumble elimination-style bump in this match (over the top rope to the floor) and sells his knee so wildly, so cartoonishly ham-like, that it is impossible to take seriously. And in all fairness, you know what? If this match went on *before* the first ever Royal Rumble in 1988, I would have accepted that story. When a man gets thrown over the top rope, injury is liable to occur. It is DANGEROUS to throw a man into the air, out of the ring, and onto the floor.
Unfortunately, this match went on *after* the 1988 Royal Rumble. This was the technical main event of the ’88 Rumble show, in the now-antiquated 1980’s TV format that saw the biggest matches placed at the start or middle of cards. So instead of a clever set-up for the Royal Rumble, we saw 19 men get thrown over the top rope without incident — and then this jabroni takes the same bump and reacts like he’s caught in a bear trap, en route to the Islanders winning two straight falls.
Bad, unsatisfying professional wrestling, saved only by Jesse and Vince in the booth, and Haku slapping the Christ out of these Young Stallion shit heads.
189. El Canek, Hector Garza & Perro Aguayo vs. Fuerza Guerrera, Heavy Metal & Jerry Estrada – Royal Rumble 1997 – Alamo Dome, San Antonio, TX, USA
Commentators: Vince McMahon (PBP), Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler (Colour)
A slow, botchy, old-man lucha tag team match in front of the San Antonio faithful. Listening to those three men call a match between those six men was a trip, though.
188. Ahmed Johnson v. Faarooq – Royal Rumble 1997 – Alamo Dome, San Antonio, TX, USA

Ahmed Johnson was fucking hideous in the ring. Up there with Heidenreich. By 1997, Ron Simmons had slowed down significantly. A slowwwww grudge match with a nothing finish. It’s possible that I overrated this one. 1.25* might be generous. Back-to-back jacks from the 1997 Rumble, a sneaky awful television show.
187. The Legion of Doom (Animal & Hawk) v. The Natural Disasters (Earthquake & Typhoon) – WWF Tag Team Titles – Royal Rumble 1992 – Knickerbocker Arena, Albany, NY, USA

In the pre-match promo, Hawk gets off a great line: “The Natural Disasters want to throw their weight around. Welllll. We want to throw their weight around too.” YES. Awesome. Predictably, that line was far and away the highlight of this match. Another slowwww, boring match with a cop-out, indecisive finish.

Three cheers to Jacques Rougeau for WILLING this into something that wasn’t a total waste of time. Having said that, there were multiple arse-biting spots in this match. It’s very possible that this was negative stars, and that I am unabashedly biased towards the works of THE MOUNTIE. Tony and Jesse helped a lot.
185. The J.O.B. Squad (Bob Holly & Scorpio) v. Too Much (Brian Christopher & Scott Taylor) – Royal Rumble 1999 (Sunday Night Heat) – Arrowhead Pond, Anaheim, CA, USA

Shane McMahon’s 1999 Sunday Night Heat commentary is the real MVP here. A lukewarm bowl of vanilla nothing.

Gotta say, I forgot how overtly sexual Paige’s wrestling style was in the mid 2010’s PG-era of WWE. Feels like she was 20 years after her time. Not much of a match here, but Nikki Bella had already visibly improved. She was easily the biggest star, and probably the best wrestler in this match on this night.

Not offensive, but not good in any way. I mean, it was Mabel under a ski-mask vs Mankind hours before the most violent match of his life arguably (and this is after he plummeted 15 feet off of Hell in a Cell through the announcer’s table).

Mascarita Sagrada Jr. would go on to have a fun little stint as Max Mini, and was honestly one of the top 5 workers in the company in 1997-98. Not a ton to this match, but at least MSjr. got a chance to shine.

They tried really hard to have a good match, and did not succeed. God bless the Road Dogg, he was an incredible talker and is highly charismatic, but he wasn’t very good in the ring. Make it a hardcore match, you cowards!

A very strange match. Chyna gives literally 100% of the offense to Ivory, sets her up in the corner, does the Great Muta-style handspring elbow, and then “re-aggrevates” her neck injury, leading to Ivory winning the women’s title. Kudos to WWF for coming up with something unique, but they could have let Ivory do something. Like, one single thing.
170. Bobby Roode & Chad Gable v. Scott Dawson & Razar – Royal Rumble 2019 (Pre-Show) – Chase Field, Phoenix, AZ, USA

Speaking of a very strange match. Ten bucks to everybody who remembers this one off the top of their head. This was actually a somewhat-interesting angle, where Dawson and Razar teamed up, and if they won, each of their respective teams would get a future tag team title shot. That could have been a fun few months, especially if it turned out Dawson and Razar had some kind of weird chemistry. They could have gotten a lot out of that story. So of course, Dawson and Razar lost immediately, and this was forgotten forever.
169. “The Funkasaurus” Brodus Clay v. Drew McIntyre – Royal Rumble 2012 – Scottrade Center – St. Louis, MO, USA

Hahaha, wow. Brodus Clay squashes YOUR WWE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION in minutes. Not the greatest squash match of all-time (which is CLEARLY Goldberg vs. La Parka) and really, inarguably a bad match by any definition. But y’know this was a bit of fun.
168. Bobby Lashley v. Test – ECW Title – Royal Rumble 2007 – AT&T Center – San Antonio, TX, USA

Similar to the previous selection, an inarguably rotten pro wrestling match. But one with a certain car-crash charisma to it.
167. The Mountie v “Rowdy” Roddy Piper – WWF Intercontinental Title – Royal Rumble 1992 – Knickerbocker Arena, Albany, NY, USA

Cheesy 1990s ‘rasslin entertainment, here. The New York crowd was fucking MOLTEN HOT for this wrestling match. It would be incorrect to call this a total fail. It would also be incorrect to say that this was good in any form or fashion. I mean the Mountie’s ELECTROSHOCK SOUND EFFECT~!~! played over the loudspeakers when Piper shocked him with the fucking cattle prod thing. Bad match, but a charming presentation.
Oh! One more important thing: A great “……..and NEWWWWWWWWWWWW” call from Howard Finkel and an ALL-TIME GREAT post match celly. Legitimately worth watching for that moment alone. In fact, here. Have some.
166. The Miz & Mizdow v. The Usos (Jey Uso & Jimmy Uso) – Royal Rumble 2015 – Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, PN, USA

It’s criminal how much WWE fights themselves on babyfaces, and how long they’ve been doing that for. Mizdow was the only popular wrestler in this match, and of course barely did anything at all in it, much to the fans’ dismay.
This is a master class on how to troll an audience, which is a class that should not exist but goddamn if WWE aren’t dishing out PHD’s in that discipline.
165. The Big Show v. John “Bradshaw” Layfield v. Kurt Angle – WWE Title – Royal Rumble 2005 – Save Mart Center – Fresno, CA, USA

Bunch of interference, bunch of chicanery, bunch Big Show. Disappointing match, but perhaps it’s on me for expecting something more out of 66% of this field.
164. The Undertaker v. Yokozuna – Casket Match – WWF World Title – Royal Rumble 1994 – Providence Civic Center – Providence, RI, USA

The very definition of morbidly entertaining, this match set the gold standard for bullshit in WWF. In a match where you have to throw your opponent into a casket to win, 10 people (literally! Ten different living humans!) run-in to help Yokozuna beat the Undertaker, only to watch The Dead Man rise up to the heavens after the match.
I’m not sure what more to add to this. It was bad, but tell me you didn’t have a wee bit of fun the first time you saw it.

Here we go. My pick for the worst Royal Rumble match in history (non-Saudi division). Just a nothing happening, boring match, where a man who did not need the win got it. The commentary was weird, the lack of Randy Savage broke my heart (but made sense in kayfabe) and overall this was the most useless Royal Rumble of all time, by my count.
